Q.
Where can I find a Taxi?
A. In most cases, the easiest way to track down a taxi cab is to walk out to the street corner and wave one down. Busy streets are typically not the best place to look for a taxi since the traffic is too busy for them to pull over. Many times taxi drivers will give foreigners a courtesy honk to let you know that they are willing to provide you with a ride. You may also request your hotel to call a taxi driver to pick you up at no additional charge.
Q.
How much does it cost?
A. All licensed taxi drivers will use a meter to determine the fare price. The meter starts at 10RMB minimum (11RMB beginning later in the evenings). The taxi meter will then calculate your price based upon a per kilometer rate. There are 3different types of taxi that charge different per kilometer rates... They range from RMB 1.2 - 2.0 (the price is located on a sticker on the back door windows).
Q.
How much does it cost for a ride from the airport?
A. If you take a taxi trip to the center of the city (approx. 15miles) You can expect to pay around 100-120RMB. This will include the Tollway fare. If your hotel is located close to the Olympic Village, you can expect your taxi fare to be on the low side since that is on the North side of the city.
Q.
Can I get a receipt?
A. Yes. When the taxi driver turns off the meter upon arrival at your destination, the meter will automatically print out a receipt. Just point to the machine, or learn to speak "receipt" in mandarin. ("fapiao")
Q.
If I forget my bag in the taxi, is there a way to get it back?
A. Taxi drivers are required to display their license in the front of the taxi cab. On the license it will note the ID number for the taxi driver. Although you may never see your lost items again, if you have this number it will at least be a little easier to track down your taxi driver. Some hotels have Concierges who open the door for you upon arrival to the hotel. Many of them will write down the Taxi driver's ID information for you in case you find out later you have lost something.
Q.
How can I communicate my destination to the driver?
A. It is very helpful to bring a map showing the destination where you would like to go. In addition, you can have a friend or the person at your hotel front desk write out your destination in Chinese Mandarin. If your driver does not know the destination, look for another taxi cab.
Q.
How much do I tip a taxi driver?
A. Taxi Drivers do not expect a tip, which is the same in all other service jobs in China. If you provide them with a tip, they will be greatly appreciative.
